Vietnam War -
Grandma - It seemed as if this war went on forever. It was for sure the first war that was brought into out into our home by t.v. It made many people realize the true horrors of the war. It made me realize how bad it really was. I was told that we were fighting this war to stop communism but when i was older I found out the land had beneficial items to us such as minerals.
Grandpa - For one, i never thought war was a good idea. I remember my father talking about how bad it was, and people needed to learn to solve issues in other manners. But once i got older i realized more so what it was about and i changed my mind a little. Not a lot, but with better understanding comes more reasoning. I remember a lot of buses were going to Fort Dix, New Jersey for basic training in the U.S Army.
Mitch - One thing i remembered for a sure fact about this war, was it was not very popular at all here in the U.S. There never really was a clear full on victory even though the the fighting had stopped. Sadly, there were no heroes that were welcomed home that i could remember. Most people hated those of witch who served our country for this war. I had a good friend in the paratrooper division that i found out had been shot down while landing. And shortly after found out our allies gave the enemies a heads up.
Carla - I never followed the wars to much. But i do remember how bad it was, seemed to go on for ages on end. And when the t.v. was able to bring this to our house it made things worse. I still highly think that war is wrong and it has way too high of a price. But again we are at war, with many lives lost and no gains for anything compared to lives lost.
Civil Rights Movement -
Grandma - I was unaware of racism as i was growing up. I visited Texas in 1963, and that's when i had my first experience with racism face to face. I had found restrooms for ladies, one for white ladies and another for black ladies. I even remember my cousin saying they usually didn't respond to a call from black neighborhoods. I remember Martin Luther King and i even took part in a march a short but later. I never understood racism and why someone hated another just for their skin color. I still believe that to this day.
Grandpa - I happened to be in Newark, NY when the riots broke out. The local school had extremely high racial tensions. I as well as your grandmother never really understood racism. I remember being afraid of our house possibly being broken into and the possibility of racism only getting worse. MLK was in my opinion a very strong leader for the Civil Rights Movement. I don't remember a lot about him, but everyone seemed to love him so it seemed like the right choice
JFK -
Grandma - He had forced Alabama school to desegregate. I remember some black kids walking into a white kid school while under the watch of the National Guard. I know JFK was right to do that, and he was a brave man, but let me tell ya, those kids were way more brave because of that. I remember a lot of people weren't going to vote for him because he was catholic. And to end it with JFK, his assassination was one of the worst things in the moment that could have happened. The country was heart broken.
Grandpa - He was a decent president, and as any other did what they thought would serve our country the best. He desegregated schools witch was a very big help to get rid of racial tensions in the end. In the moment, it only made them a lot worse. I don't much like the idea of a bug gov. and that they should only intervene when necessary, witch isn't all that easy to tell when. One of the biggest things that nobody liked was his assassination.
Mitch - JFK was a very good guy, he did many things for this county especially helping with segregation. It was a real tragedy when he was killed, but only thing that can be done was to move on and hope for a president just as good or better. He had a lot of excellent game plans for the future and was helping us out like others could have only imagined.
